Topic 1 DQ 1 Example

Nursing is one of the professions that has continued to advance over the years. Nursing is critical as it ensures that the country’s healthcare system is kept in check. Traditionally, nurses are seen as support staff for the physicians. However, this rule has changed over time since nurses have sufficient training to provide primary care to patients. In the 20th century, nurses were only expected to function as helpers of medical doctors. However, this is changing gradually since nurses receive quality training to handle patients alone. Therefore, nurses are expected to ensure that all patients are comfortable and get the proper treatment. Through this, the nurses can now achieve the set nursing goals and ensure that all patients receive quality care.

Nurses are now playing new roles. According to Lopes-Júnior (2021), nurses are now coordinating care from multiple providers, helping the patients transition from the hospital to their home settings, and managing a caseload of patients who have intense care needs. Following this, it is evident that nurses have continued to get more roles in the 20th and 21st centuries. Nurses also work as health coaches as they help patients learn about various ways to prevent illnesses and promote wellness (Lopes-Júnior, 2021). Therefore, nurses have more roles and significantly impact the American healthcare system. Besides, the healthcare department is empowering nurses to make it easier for them to work towards achieving quality healthcare for all patients. As time progresses, the nurses’ roles and responsibilities will continue to change as they will be expected to do more. Therefore, the healthcare department will continue empowering nurses and giving them more roles to perform their duties as expected.

Scope of Practice Topic 2 DQ 1 Example

Nursing Regulatory Bodies are jurisdictional governmental entities that regulate nursing practice in all 50 states, four US territories, and the District of Columbia. The National Registration Boards set the criteria for safe nursing care and issue nursing licences (Papinaho et al., 2019). The NRB’s role does not end once a licence is awarded; they continue to monitor licensees’ compliance with jurisdictional laws and take appropriate action against the licences of nurses who have engaged in improper nursing practice. 

The regulatory bodies in Michigan include The Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners and the Michigan Board of Nursing. The Nurse Practice Act is a law enforced by each NRB in each jurisdiction. In order to keep their licences, nurses must follow the legislation and relevant norms. The act specifies Qualifications for obtaining a licence, the scope of work, Nursing titles that are permissible to use, and actions that may or may not occur if a nurse fails to obey the nursing law.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing developed the APRN consensus model to increase job satisfaction and elevate APRN roles. The model significantly influences education and Nursing Competency as it states that: Nurse’s education must be coherent in terms of role and population focus (Buck, 2021). Secondly, APRNs are allowed to further their education and specialize but can not be licensed only in that field. Special interest groups and nursing organizations will establish education and assessment procedures for specialty areas. 

Specialty education can be completed concurrently with the APRN coursework required for licensure or after graduation. Nursing boards will not assess or regulate specialty-level competency; instead, professional bodies will do so. In terms of experience, the model overcomes the barriers that prevent APRNs from practising within the full scope of their knowledge and skills. Secondly, there has been uniformity in licensure and titling across jurisdictions so that similar APRNs are no longer confused.

Besides knowing the role and scope of one’s own practice, it is essential to understand the role and scope of other nurse specialties to ensure effective collaboration among nurses, the organization, and other professionals with whom advanced registered nurses regularly interact.

  <Clinical Nurse Specialist> <Nurse Educator> Observations (Similarities/Differences)
Ethics Clinical nurse specialists possess complex decision-making abilities in addition to their extensive expert knowledge. They are well-informed on ethical principles in their profession. Studies have shown that they can effectively deal with complicated ethical issues that arise during patient care (Fukuda et al., 2020). This is beneficial not only to the patient but also to other nursing staff who can be enlightened as clinical nursing specialists can offer them guidance. Nursing educators have been entrusted with the responsibility of creating awareness and training nursing students on professional ethics. This necessitates using interventions such as workshops, group discussions, and case scenarios to instill these ethical principles (Izadi et al., 2020). This ensures that students can uphold these values in the future during real-life clinical practice. Nurse educators and CNSs are conservators of professional, ethical codes who can guide nurses and nursing students in adopting the same.

CNSs operate within the clinical setup and healthcare organizations, whereas nursing educators teach within nursing learning institutions.

Education Clinical nurse specialists are advanced registered nurses. They usually have attained a master’s degree or doctoral training in their specialty (Ko et al., 2019). They are also accredited to practice in the clinical setting. They can educate other nurses, as well as the general population, on matters of health in an evidence-based manner. The minimum qualification to work as a nurse educator is registered nurse certification together with certification in their field of teaching. However, this depends on the training institutions that may require a higher level of training, such as a master’s degree or doctoral training.  The two professions require possession of a registered nurse certification.

A Master’s degree or higher level qualifies one to be a clinical nurse specialist, which is not mandatory for a nurse educator.

Leadership Clinical nurse specialists play a critical leadership role within the healthcare organization. They engage in administrative and management roles and participate in major decision-making to ensure quality patient-centered care (Ko et al., 2019). They lead the nurses in consultation and collaboration with other healthcare professionals (Lamb et al., 2018). They also take part in the formulation of policies regarding patient management and govern other nurses in various units within the hospital in implementing patient nursing care. Nurse educators demonstrate leadership to their students by being their training facilitators. They are also role models and agents of change for the students through professional development. They also cultivate teamwork and collaboration among the students, especially in patient care. Clinical nurse specialists and nurse educators are both looked up to as role models by other nurses and students, respectively.

They are both advocates for change through professional development and training.

CNSs play a leadership role within the clinical setting, whereas nurse educators lead in the learning institution setting.

CNSs equip their subordinates with evidence-based clinical skills in clinical nursing care which is limited as compared to learning institutions which majorly offer theoretical knowledge.

Public Health CSNs ensure the provision of quality care to patients to ensure the wellness of the general population. Together with other multidisciplinary teams, they participate in health education for patients and the general public. Nurse educators enlighten the students on infection prevention and control as part of the curriculum.

They also participate in and sometimes involve students in conducting scientific research on issues that may impact public health within the community.

Both contribute to public health through awareness creation.

CSNs are in more contact with the patients and the general public and thus play a greater role in public health.

Health Care Administration CSNs play an administrative role in the hospital setting by overseeing other nursing staff. They also offer direct nursing care to patients.



Nursing educators have limited healthcare administration roles.

They, however, have the qualifications if needed.

Both have the competencies to offer health care administration.

CSNs are better positioned to offer these services since they work within the hospital setting, whereas nurse educators may already have tight schedules in their training roles.

Informatics CSNs may promote the use of technology for ease of communication with other staff as well as the use of telehealth to ensure broader coverage in patient care.


Most learning institutions have implemented technology in training students; thus, nurse educators can disseminate information through such platforms. Both use information in their line of duty for communication and improved quality of learning and care services.

CSNs may be directly involved in installing and maintaining communication technologies within their workplace, whereas nurse educators’ role is limited.

Business/Finance CSNs may participate in policy-making that ensures the cost-effective delivery of health services as they undertake their management roles.




Can offer help to institution leadership on how to offer effective and affordable learning to all students with the available resources. Both play a role in matters of finances within their respective institutions. CSNs are more involved due to their administrative and managerial role.
Specialty (e.g., Family, Acute Care) Areas of specialties by CSNs include administration and management, research, and clinical practice within any relevant department within the hospital.


Areas of specialties available for nurse educators training learners within any faculty as well as an administrative role within the learning institution. Both have extensive opportunities, but the difference is the setup, which is either the hospital or the learning institution.
