NRS428VN Topic 1 Community Public Health Nursing Paper Epidemiology Paper Requirements

  1. Describe the chosen communicable disease, including causes, symptoms, mode of transmission, complications, treatment, and the demographic of interest (mortality, morbidity, incidence, and prevalence). Is this a reportable disease? If so, provide details about reporting time, whom to report to, etc.
  2. Describe the social determinants of health and explain how those factors contribute to the development of this disease.
  3. Discuss the epidemiologic triangle as it relates to the communicable disease you have selected. Include the host factors, agent factors (presence or absence), and environmental factors. Are there any special considerations or notifications for the community, schools, or general population?
  4. Explain the role of the community health nurse (case finding, reporting, data collection, data analysis, and follow-up) and why demographic data are necessary to the health of the community.
  5. Identify at least one national agency or organization that addresses the communicable disease chosen and describe how the organizations contribute to resolving or reducing the impact of disease.

Topic 2 DQ 1

NRS428VN Topic 1 Community Public Health Nursing Paper

What are social determinants of health?  Explain how social determinants of health contribute to the development of disease.  Describe the fundamental idea that the communicable disease chain model is designed to represent. Give an example of the steps a nurse can take to break the link within the communicable disease chain.

Topic 2 DQ 2

Select a global health issue affecting the international health community. Briefly describe the global health issue and its impact on the larger public health care systems (i.e., continents, regions, countries, states, and health departments). Discuss how health care delivery systems work collaboratively to address global health concerns and some of the stakeholders that work on these issues.

Re: Topic 2 DQ 2 Sample Approach

The Covid-19 outbreak from the Coronavirus has impacted the international health community. This virus causes mild to moderate respiratory illness and most people affected will recover. However, those with underlying health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, lung conditions, or those immunocompromised are at a higher risk of death. The virus is spread through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose through coughing or sneezing and is very contagious. NRS428VN Topic 1 Community Public Health Nursing Paper

It has impacted every continent with large numbers of cases and deaths. According to the WHO (World Health Organization) website the top countries impacted include America, Europe, South-East Asia, Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and the Western Pacific (WHO, n.d.). Globally there have been 176,531,710 cases reported with 3,826,181 deaths from this virus (WHO, n.d.). Here in the United States, there have been 33,315,272 cases with 597,965 deaths according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) (CDC, n.d.). NRS428VN Topic 1 Community Public Health Nursing Paper

During this pandemic global health systems were overburdened by the number of people needing diagnosis, isolation, treatment, and then vaccinations (Maia Chagas, et al., 2020). Shortcomings were evident across the world from health care staffing, facilities for testing and treatment, hospital beds, and ventilators. The WHO along with United Nations worked to get education and recommendations out to countries throughout the world. In the United States the CDC went into action immediately along with national, state, and local governments, to ensure the safety of our country. National travel was halted to prevent the spread, along with masking mandates, and social distancing.

As the nation was shut down some community stakeholders such as factories and assembly lines began making ventilator equipment and mask to help with the shortage. Other stakeholders allowed use of their facilities and parking lots for pop up testing sites. Some health care workers not in direct patient care were redeployed to work at testing sites and in ICUs to care for the overwhelming number of patients being hospitalized.

Though it has been a tough year, we have learned a lot, developed, and vaccinated thousands and are beginning to see our nation and the world getting back to normal. It is interesting to me to think of what the future will hold and what changes will become a normal part of life.

Will masking become normal during flu season? Have kids lost all snow days due to use of virtual learning? Will the social isolation and looking at a computer screen daily affect the development of our kids as they continue to grow? Will this challenging year of learning cause the kids to fall behind and lead to their struggling in school in the years to come? All of these are questions and concerns many are asking.
