Purpose

The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in organizing, integrating, applying, and critically appraising scholarly literature regarding success strategies for graduate nursing education. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This discussion will support the professional formation of the nurse practitioner role. Course Outcomes

This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

Conflict Resolution

Conflicts in healthcare are common and can result from various factors and occur at any level. These conflicts can arise between staff, patients, and relatives. The major causes of conflicts are poor communication, varied perceptions, failure to articulate goals, varied values, beliefs, or opinions, unclear/unfair expectations, limited resources, competition for power, and personality differences (Folger et al., 2021). Conflict management efficacy determines the satisfaction, relationship, and collaboration between the parties involved, hence the need for amicable conflict resolution. This discussion discusses a past conflict, how the conflict was resolved, the efficacy of the resolution methods, and identifies a preferred mode of conflict resolution. 

During my practice, a patient was brought to the facility and was diagnosed with tuberculosis and thus isolated. The unit has strict policies on the need for personal protective equipment, and all care professionals and relatives were required to use PPE to access the room. The stakeholders involved were the patient’s relatives and the nurse. Relatives were enraged and stated that their patient seemed healthy and that there was no need for PPEs during the short visit. The relative’s role was to comply with the policies, while the nurse’s role was to enforce the policies. The two parties had a role in communicating effectively and committing to fostering a good relationship.

I called the relatives and discussed the need for PPEs with them, given the highly infectious and contagious nature of the condition, and that they could not visit their relatives without PPEs. I explained the impact of the disease and the need for other interventions, such as contact tracing and testing. I also offered to assist them in the process, such as wearing the PPEs. The resolution showed empathy and provided practical support, which helped de-escalate the conflict, and the relatives complied with the infection control. The conflict resolution method used was collaboration, where the resolution focused on satisfying both parties.

The resolution was effective and achieved the desired outcome. It helped ensure that the relatives adhered to the institutional policies and took additional steps to protect their well-being. Collaboration was the best resolution style for managing the conflict. Collaboration is a conflict resolution method where both parties focus on finding a solution that satisfies both parties and ensure they work together to reach a mutually acceptable outcome (Delak & Širok, 2022). The conflict resolution method ensured that the relatives understood the policies and their significance in protecting their health. The resolution also included additional measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the relatives. It enabled the relatives to meet the patient while ensuring they use PPEs and also helped maintain the relationship between the care professional and the relatives.

My preferred mode of conflict resolution is collaboration. Collaboration is a win-win approach where parties work together to find a mutually beneficial solution. Sinclair and Palokas (2023) note that a collaboration conflict resolution strategy requires both parties to express their concerns, which are then considered when selecting an outcome that satisfies everyone. The strategy ensures that the parties find a shared solution, which is key to maintaining relationships.

Collaboration ensures fairness in decision-making and is crucial in maintaining social relationships, which are integral to workplace success (Kayser & Kaplan, 2020). Conflicts in healthcare are common, given the many factors precipitating them. Conflict resolution strategies and skills help care professionals solve these conflicts by ensuring quality outcomes and maintenance of harmony. Care professionals should choose conflict resolution methods that best suit the needs of the parties and work towards achieving satisfaction for all parties.
