Substance use disorder (SUD), otherwise known as addiction, is a national public health problem (The U.S. Burden of Disease Collaborators, 2018) and is considered a public health crisis by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (2018). One in seven Americans experiences a SUD (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022), impacting the patient’s life and society overall. SUD is a treatable, chronic disease harming health, and social function, and impairing control over substance use (CDC, 2022).
This multifaceted disorder leads to cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms (CDC, 2022), with complex interactions between biological, psychological, and social factors (van Duijvenbodea & VanDerNagelap, 2019). Overdose deaths are 91,799, and there are 27.9 drug overdose deaths per 100,000 population (National Center for Health Statistics, 2022), which provides evidence of SUD as a major problem that is necessary to address. Interventions usually include therapy as the standard treatment, support depending on the patient’s needs, and individualized interventions, which illustrate a need to have a multi-pronged approach for a complex disorder due to the biopsychosocial factors (Chou et al., 2018; van Duijvenbodea & VanDerNagelap, 2019).
Individualized interventions can include education for the patient’s new parenting role, mindfulness activities, or oxytocin to increase attendance in therapy (Chou et al., 2018; Price et al., 2019; Stauffer et al., 2020). The purpose of this review is to appraise the evidence from research studies and synthesize the results related to the national practice problem to determine overarching principles to guide an evidence-based approach to address the severe problem of SUD.
