Ensuring Ethical and Protective Processes

This project will use a holistic approach to ensure an ethical and protective process. All participants will provide informed consent, which will clearly outline the nature, purpose, potential risks and benefits of the intervention (Millum & Bromwich, 2021). Strict privacy and confidentiality regulations will be used during the collection and safekeeping of anonymized data (Zuo et al., 2021).

Only approved individuals directly involved in the project will have access to any identifiable information, which will be handled with the utmost care. As exemplified by Penney et al. (2021), concerns and questions from participants will be addressed through regularly scheduled contact and feedback loops. The non-pharmacological nature of the intervention itself also prioritizes the participants’ autonomy and overall well-being.

Project Status and IRB Approval

The project is presently in the planning stage, and the process for IRB approval has commenced. The practicum site mandates IRB approval, and efforts have been made to adhere to the required protocols. The submission is underway, and documentation is being prepared according to IRB regulations.

In adult smokers in a rural health clinical practice, does the implementation of the CAPTURE tool, compared to the current practice, impact the rate of referrals to pulmonology in 10 weeks?

How will you ensure an ethical and protective process for all involved in this project, including patients and other stakeholders?

Ethical practice and protecting all stakeholders will be essential in initiating the DNP project. Staff, patient, and caregiver involvement is necessary (Hunt et al., 2021). The ethical oversight IRB process is challenging in my practice. There is a preexisting governance for implementing projects. When handling patient data, the privacy and confidentiality of patients must be prioritized. As project leader, I will implement ways to protect patient information safely. All direct information about the patient will be in the EMR, which will be password-protected. This will ensure that both patients and the institution are protected.

Beneficence must be considered. Ethically, the project must be an act of doing good or kindness that is above obligation (Mondragon Barrios et al., 2022). The benefit must be of value to the patient. Using the CAPTURE tool and sending patients for pulmonary evaluation would benefit the patient more than the risks; as a project manager, I will need to educate the office staff that this will help the patient.

I am glad we have a head start on completing this project. I was informed that my site would not require IRB approval because I did not conduct research. After contacting my new practicum site, I was informed that I needed to initiate the process. I have contacted the person in charge of the project at my facility. My preceptor will now have to complete the CITI program. I feel awful about making her do the whole process. I hope to keep the sight and preceptor moving forward.
