Project Title: Improving Medication Adherence Among Depressed Patients Through Weekly Administered Adherence Therapy
Practice Problem and Practice Gap to Address: In the current mental health clinic, medical directors and providers have identified poor adherence to medication management to be problematic. While this can affect many mental health populations, those with Major Depressive Disorder commonly fail to adhere to medication instructions, which undermines care, quality of life, and cost efficiency of services (Solmi et al., 2020). In chart audits and reviews, it is estimated that about half of depressed patients in the clinic fail to comply with medication instructions and use. This has similarly been recognized as a national issue among depressed patients as well (Solmi et al., 2020). Based on this information, this is a current practice problem that this project seeks to address.
In terms of a specific practice gap, medication adherence problems are often related to a variety of issues. In many instances, patients may not believe a medication will help, or they believe they will experience unwanted side effects and adverse events. Cost of care is also a concern for many, and some prefer not to take any kind of medication but instead pursue non-medical treatments (Balikai et al., 2022).
Other factors also related to perceptions about providers, healthcare systems, and pharmaceutical companies (Khalifeh et al., 2023). In most cases, these concerns and beliefs are not explored in the mental health clinic. However, exposing such beliefs and discussing them in a respectful manner can notably improve treatment planning as well as medication adherence (Khalifeh et al., 2023). Through medication adherence therapy, nurses can address this current practice gap and potentially improve medication compliance and patient outcomes (Balikai et al., 2022). This is similarly a focus of the current project.
