Organizations are led by their vision, mission, and values. They guide all organizational activities, ensure focus, define conduct, and keep employees focused on achieving organizational goals. Personal philosophies guide individuals in achieving personal and professional goals. Professions such as nursing are also guided by a set of core values that dictate the conduct of professionals in the field. Aligning personal philosophy, professional core values, and organizational mission and vision, as well as values, can help enhance organizational, professional, and personal success. This discussion explores the mission, vision, and values of an organization I worked with previously and how these tenets align with its core values and my nursing philosophy.
The organization selected is The Michigan Department of Corrections. The mission is “To create a safer Michigan by holding offenders accountable while promoting their success” (Michigan Department of Corrections, n.d.). The vision is “We will continue to be the leader in corrections by transforming lives through innovation and dedication” (Michigan Department of Corrections, n.d.) The organizational values are integrity, teamwork, leadership, excellence, respect, and loyalty.
The leaders in the organization portray behaviors that are highly congruent with the organizational mission, vision, and values. These include developing friendly rehabilitation programs for ex-convicts to ensure seamless integration into the community. Leaders also ensure the smooth running of the departments, focusing on individual transformation and respect for human life. The correction department leaders also develop favorable policies for effective offender rehabilitation to better the communities. Thus, their behaviors align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
The nursing core values are empathy (compassion for all individuals), integrity (honesty), professionalism (competent work and adherence to guiding protocols and standards), advocacy (patient and professional advocacy), respect for persons (everyone is treated with respect), and altruism (Zemlak et al., 2024). The nursing core values focus on caring, while the organization’s core values focus on rehabilitation. The organization and the nursing profession differ in their mission and vision but have some degree of congruence.
The department is dedicated to enhancing lives and holding offenders accountable while promoting their success. The nursing profession emphasizes compassion and commitment to the well-being of patients and the population. The nursing profession and the organization share some core values, such as respect and integrity, which ensure the right things are done and that individuals are treated with respect. While the nursing profession and the Michigan Department of Corrections serve different purposes, they emphasize similar values, hence their congruence.
As a nurse, everyone is entitled to compassion, respect, and support. Patients from diverse backgrounds deserve care without discrimination or judgment, as Cary et al. (2020) support. I also believe in holistic care, where patients’ physical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs are identified and met. I also respect human dignity and prioritize patients, ensuring quality health outcomes and safe care delivery. The organization’s mission focuses on life transformation, holding offenders accountable while promoting their success.
The organization’s mission and vision thus align with my philosophy of ensuring human improvement and transformation, which are the central approaches. As a nurse, I believe in individual empowerment through education and support to enhance self-reliance and improve health. The mission of the organization is to hold offenders accountable while promoting success. My philosophy is based on core values of integrity, human dignity, respect, and compassion. Integrity and respect are core values of the institution, hence some degree of congruence.
