Self-leadership is a foundational building block to leadership competency.  Self-leadership is the ability to establish personal goals and motivational tools to promote positive changes in the workplace (Sowndarya & Elavarasan, 2022). Understanding oneself, behavioral, and emotional awareness are necessary to enhance the drive to meet goals. 

A leader’s self-leadership skills impact those they lead by recognizing strengths and weaknesses that affect performance. Identification of strengths and weaknesses among a team as well as oneself can aid in the development of advanced skills and growth in areas that may need more training or education (Sowndarya & Elavarasan, 2022). The leader can share leadership tools, strategies, and learned leadership behaviors with their team to promote a cohesive and collaborative environment.

Identify one self-leadership skill that you consider to be a strength.

One self-leadership skill that I consider to be a strength is self-awareness. In order to be an effective leader, it is necessary to be self-aware and reflective to increase influence, gain perspective, and develop team relationships (Sowndarya & Elavarasan, 2022). Understanding how one is perceived and being able to adapt to an environment or situation improves productivity and teamwork (Sowndarya & Elavarasan, 2022).

For example, I am self-aware of my desire to lead and control the direction of a project; however, I am able to pause and reflect on the opinion of others, hear their ideas, and incorporate alternative methods of achieving a common project goal.  I worked on a unit that was piloting early mobility in the post-operative patient. My initial idea was for the Physical Therapy Assistant to work with the patients for early ambulation. This did not work well due to staffing issues and workload volumes. 

Our team came together and decided to train current RN and CNA staff in proper body mechanics, use of lift equipment and establish a structured mobility schedule for our patients to work with the Physical Therapy Assistants for consistent mobilization.  As a team lead, I initially perceived that therapy was the sole responsibility; however, after participating in active listening and brainstorming with the team, a more effective method was developed, which ultimately improved the working relationship among disciplines and benefited patient care outcomes.  

Identify one self-leadership skill in which you have an opportunity for improvement.

One self-leadership skill that I can improve is self-care.  Due to work demands and home responsibilities, I often neglect personal needs to meet the needs of others. Self-care can decrease stress, center oneself, and improve mental, emotional, and physical health (Shanafelt et.al., 2020). As a healthcare worker, it is important to the team and patients to model healthy behaviors, which begins with self-care. This continues to be a struggle for me, which I continue to work towards overcoming.  

Discuss two strategies to cultivate your self-leadership skills.

Two strategies to cultivate my self-leadership skills are to improve my active listening and work on conflict resolution. Although I practice active listening in the workplace, I tend to get excited and want to share my ideas immediately, which can be perceived as having poor active listening skills. I am aware of my tendency to get overly excited about a new project.  I take notes during all meetings to reflect on the ideas of others and engage in open dialogue to further discuss project proposals. This allows for a better understanding of others and promotes active listening.

Another strategy I am working towards cultivating my self-leadership skills is conflict resolution.  I tend to avoid conflict and to be a “people pleaser” in order to avoid confrontation.  I have participated in leadership courses, which are focused on conflict resolution, to enhance my skills in conflict resolution.  I have learned that conflict in a controlled and professional environment can lead to innovative idea development.  However, conflict resolution requires inquiry, evaluation, consistency, clearly established expectations, and active listening.  One method I use to mitigate potential conflict is to establish clear roles, expectations, and guidelines for the team.  Weekly follow-up and touchpoints are also scheduled to review progress and barriers.  These strategies have helped me cultivate my self-leadership skills in the healthcare environment.

In order to lead others, you must manage your emotions, effectively communicate and be motivated towards accomplishing goals and tasks. Leaders encourage others to achieve similar goals by leading themselves first. In order to lead yourself, you need to have emotional intelligence, self-awareness, self-reflection, self-care, motivation, control, discipline, efficiency, management and goals. All of these skills build confidence. In order to lead others, you must have empathy, relationship-building skills, mentoring skills, strong communication skills, listening skills, conflict resolution skills, the ability to give and receive feedback, and dedication.

A leader’s self-leadership skills impact those they lead, as it sets a positive example for the group or team as a whole and inspires them to become a leader themselves. Leaders encourage others to work on themselves and build confidence and trust. Generally, it created a healthy and positive work environment.

One self-leadership skill that I consider to be a strength is emotional intelligence. I can control my feelings when I am upset, angry, or frustrated. One self-leadership skill that I can improve is self-care. I believe that a lot of nurses have room for improvement in this area, as we spend a lot of time caring for our patients, family, friends, and others, while forgetting to take care of ourselves. We need to prioritize our health by ensuring that we get an adequate amount of sleep, make time for relaxing or hobbies, eat healthy, and practice mindfulness and meditation to relieve stress. It is important that you also make time to do the things that you love. Burnout is real, and a lack of self-care can negatively impact your happiness.

One important strategy to cultivate or improve my self-leadership skills is self-reflection. Reflection is important to identify your areas of improvement, values and goals. There are always things that we can improve in our lives and no one is perfect. Another strategy that can improve my leadership skills is self-discipline. Self-discipline allows you to be consistent by staying focused on your goal. Making a plan for your goals and following the plan can help you stay on track.
