 Appropriate sources include state boards of nursing or regulatory bodies. The scope of practice for an NP in Florida has its operation guidelines outlined in the Florida Nurse Practice Act. This restriction applies more so in the diagnosis and treatment of patients without the supervision of their supervising specialists. However, as of 2020, House Bill 607 of Florida has been passed to permit the fully independent practice of NPs in primary care after sufficient training and practice experiences (Florida Board of Nursing, 2021). This is important for NPs practicing in family medicine, general pediatrics, and general internal medicine but does not apply to other specialties. To qualify for autonomous practice, NPs must:

  • Hold an active Florida APRN license.
    • Complete at least 3,000 clinical practice hours under a physician’s supervision within five years of applying.

If the NP does not qualify to practice independently, then a written supervisory plan with a physician is necessary for documenting their roles and responsibilities. The coordinator role of the physician in supervising NP’s practice is stated in the collaborative agreement regarding diagnosis, treatment and prescription of medication. In these cases, NPs may have broader responsibilities in primary care, including patient education, chronic disease management, and preventive care.
