The purpose of this assignment is to identify an information network in your work setting. This could be within an organizational unit, an entire physical building, or across facilities. If you are unclear about what constitutes a network, consider your home computer setup. If you have a laptop and a printer, then you probably have a wireless router connected to a modem so that you have your own home network, which consists of a 1) computer and 2) a printer that communicates through a wireless network. You are now asked to think about networks on another scale for this assignment. While you may ask for information from your information technology staff, you should be able to provide an educated guess if the information is not given to you verbatim based on information provided in the lesson and available to you through literature.

ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW

You will analyze a network that you use/are familiar with in your work setting, comparing it against network characteristics found in the literature and discuss the significance these network characteristics have for your informatics practice.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Identify an electronic or computer-based information network in your work setting. This could be within an organizational unit, an entire physical building, or across facilities.  Do NOT select EHRs, which are software applications.
  2. Use the template provided to describe the network’s purposes, size, software/applications supported, architecture, scope (e.g., how much of the unit, building, or organization is connected by the network), users, performance/ connectivity, and devices supported.
  3. Relate the extent to which the network’s characteristics fit your findings in the literature (compare your network to networks described in published articles).
  4. Identify the significance these network characteristics have for you as an informatics nurse, and the informatics practice or standard areas impacted OR that you might use to support healthcare providers and patients. Please provide literature support.
REVISION PROCESS

If you do not receive at least a proficient rating in any content category, you can re-submit your assignment with revision to that content category to improve the points earned within that specific section.  Please note the following guidelines:
