NR505 Week 6 Reflection on Learning Example

To be honest, undertaking the CITI module has been a thrilling experience. I began the course with limited knowledge of research ethics. Fortunately, I have gained a great deal of knowledge about respect and the handling of human subjects in research. However, I was surprised to learn that, before the evolution of research ethics, most people who lost their lives after being forced to participate in research had never given their consent. Yet the authorities did nothing about it. Thanks to the various ethics and principles that have been established to uphold human dignity, confidentiality, and respect for life.

While undertaking CITI, I noticed that it shares many similarities with the American Nurses Association (ANA) code of ethics.  The ANA code of ethics outlines the standards of ethics that every nurse should adhere to when handling every individual with compassion, respect, and empathy (Copeland, 2020). Additionally, it outlines the duties and obligations of nurses, including protecting life, promoting health, preventing disease, and alleviating suffering while restoring health (Solari, 2018). Similarly, CITI emphasizes the importance of respecting human life while protecting individuals from painful experiences during research, an act that preserves human dignity (Dellasega & Kanaskie, 2021).

Besides, both CITI and ANA advocate for upholding ethical principles, including justice, confidentiality, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and privacy when dealing with human subjects (Kaewkungwal & Adams, 2019). These principles not only ensure the provision of quality care by nurses but also ensure that participants of any research are treated with utmost care and dignity. Thus, preventing the exploitation of individuals. Therefore, understanding the concepts discussed in both ANA and CITI will be relevant to my project. Because my research involves human samples, research ethics will help me handle people respectfully and ensure dignity. Ultimately, I will utilize this knowledge to obtain informed consent, provide explanations about the project, and maintain the confidentiality of the information provided.
