I work as a registered nurse at an urban healthcare facility offering primary, secondary, and tertiary care to patients with all ranges of medical, surgical, pediatric, and mental health issues. In my practice, implementing point-of-care foot temperature monitoring technology could positively impact the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers, thereby reducing the need for future amputations. Diabetic patients with no current foot ulcers would benefit from this nursing intervention, thus calling for the need for practice change in my practice setting. This primary preventive intervention would utilize infrared thermosensors to detect hot spots in diabetic patients’ feet, assessing the risk of diabetic foot ulcers.
