Depression-related suicide is a prevalent and critical global public health issue. According to the World Health Organization (2021), suicide accounts for over 700,000 deaths annually, making it the fourth leading cause of death in individuals aged 15-29. Depression is a significant contributor to the global burden of disease and disability, leading to increased healthcare costs and lost productivity. The total economic burden associated with depression is estimated to be $210 billion annually, making it one of the most costly mental health disorders in the United States (Greenberg et al., 2021).

Practice Change Idea

My proposed practice change idea is to implement evidence-based interventions, suicide risk assessment, and depression screening using tools such as the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6+) screening tool for mental health disorders in our healthcare setting. This standardized screening tool will help identify individuals at risk of depression-related suicide and allow for early intervention and appropriate referrals (Stolk et al., 2021).  This project will also involve comprehensive education and training for nurses on the best practices for depression screening, suicide risk assessment, and evidence-based interventions.

Grant Funding

One potential non-research grant to support the evidence-based practice change initiative is the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) Nursing Research Grant. The ANF provides funding to support nursing research projects that contribute to the development of the nursing profession and promote patient care excellence (American Nurses Foundation, 2023).
