Discuss the Impact on your Nursing Practice

One of the profound nursing figures who influenced my nursing practice was a nurse manager in a psychiatric health unit. The manager had both positive and negative influences on my profession. On the positive side, the manager encouraged everyone to develop critical thinking skills and apply reflective skills in their practice. The manager encouraged me to view challenges as opportunities for growth and that one should always look back on their successes and failures and learn from them. The nurse manager also focused on individual and collective accountability in the workplace. This enabled me to own up to the results of my actions, encouraging me to ensure that my interventions were effective.

However, the manager faced some shortcomings that ultimately affected teamwork. For instance, the manager lacked effective conflict resolution and communication skills. They did not practice open communication, which often led to misunderstandings with the team. It left me frustrated and unsupported during high-stress scenarios, which required that information be communicated clearly to promote effective decision-making. For example, whenever I felt like I needed extra help or information when dealing with a situation, the manager was inapproachable or absent. In the absence of effective communication among the teams, the confidence of the team members is greatly affected, which prevents them from making quick decisions, subsequently affecting the level of care offered to patients (Marshall & Broome, 2021).

Discuss the Impact on the Practice Environment

The impact of the manager’s ability was profound in the healthcare setting. They focused on accountability and professionalism from all healthcare workers in the unit. The leader held everyone accountable for the quality of care provided to the patients. This encouraged all team members to work together to provide the highest quality of care possible. Setting this high standard of excellence in care helped ensure that the manager and team members held themselves accountable throughout. This approach helped ensure that the patients were consulted and included in making decisions about their care, a core principle of psychiatric nursing.

On the flip side, the manager’s shortcomings in relationship building and resource management had immense effects on the team and the quality of care. At times, the team felt unfragmented, making it difficult to collaborate during interventions. There was a high turnover rate, as most of the healthcare workers could not keep up with the high-stress environment. When the workers left, the remaining nurses were forced to take on a high workload, which contributed to burnout and loss of motivation in providing patients with high-quality care. This subsequently led to suboptimal patient outcomes and affected the reputation of the unit. The psychiatric health unit requires that all healthcare team members collaborate and communicate effectively with each other.

Analyze the Individual’s Leadership Skills Using AONL Leadership Competencies

The manager had robust competencies in professionalism, personal and professional accountability, and foundational thinking. They placed a high premium on ensuring that the healthcare workers provided patients with the highest quality of care possible and that they were accountable for the results of their actions. They also stressed the importance of lifelong continuous learning in helping workers stay abreast of the current information and guidelines on care and reflecting on their practice to identify areas of opportunity. These align with the AONL’s emphasis on seeking feedback and understanding oneself to uphold high-quality services. This focus on professional growth and self-awareness positively influenced both the staff and the patients, as it set a standard for excellence and continuous improvement (AONL, 2022).

The AONL highlights that nurse managers and leaders should be competent in relationship-building, effective communication, and transparency. However, the manager had shortcomings in communicating effectively and transparently with others, which affected cohesion among the team. The failure to communicate effectively with the team led to conflicts and difficulty identifying challenges and working towards common goals.
